After switching over from Nikon Cameras, I was using a Canon T2i (550D) for the longest time. Although the Canon T2i is considered a “beginner’s” DSLR, it had served me well for a while. In fact, most of the images you see on this site and on my Facebook page were taken with it. It is a fantastic camera! When people saw my photos it was not unlikely for them to say “WOW! You must have a really nice camera!”. Little did they know they most likely had a better camera than I did.
I have always been a firm believer that a great photographer will produce great images no matter what brand or price tag his/her camera carries. Knowledge and experience will always serve a photographer better than how much money they have spent on gear. There is a great YouTube channel geared towards photography and photography equipment called “DigitalRev TV” that demonstrates this exact point in a series called “Pro Photographer, Cheap Camera”. They give a professional photographer a very, very, very low end camera setup and see what they can come up with. Of course, they do very well. Check out how pro photographer CHASE JARVIS did with a LEGO CAMERA!

So why even bother to upgrade from my beloved T2i then?
Well, the answer is really simple. I am a wedding photographer.
I needed a camera that can handle the low light situations that I face at every gig. The T2i’s images did not hold up very well when it came to high ISO. Anything over 4oo ISO I would find almost unusable, but then again I am a pixel peeper. Image noise has always been a huge pet peeve of mine so I have a strict sense of what is acceptable as far as image quality. I am all about providing the best quality possible to my clients. Although I was getting great results already, I knew I can do better. I felt like I was being held back!
About a couple weeks ago I purchased the Canon 5D Mark II and to say the least, I am a very happy camper. It is a solid camera. A very well put together piece of equipment, comfortable grip, breath taking quality, and a full frame sensor that handles high ISO like a champ! I am still getting use to not having to worry about image noise. I feel comfortable and confident that the camera will deliver the way I need it to.
Here is a list of the things that I love about the camera so far…
- Solidly constructed
- 3 Custom Modes on the Dial
- High ISO Performance
- Full Frame Sensor
- Fantastic Quality Video
- Weather Resistant Body
- 21+ Megapixel Res
- Manual and Preset White Balance
- Small RAW file option
- Fast Processor
- And more!
The Canon 5D Mark II has rarely left my side in the past couple weeks. It took me a little while to get use to the new grip and layout of the camera but I find it much more comfortable and practical than the T2i. The large dial on the back for aperture selection and menu navigation is very convenient. Not to mention the nifty joystick which allows me to select my focal point on the fly. I feel like I am spending less time staring at the menu of the camera and more time shooting. This is essential to wedding photography. I can change my settings quickly and get the shot.
In the near future I will doing a blog post comparing the crop sensor 550D and the full frame 5D Mark II to illustrate the visual difference, something I was very curious about for the longest time. I think you will find it interesting as well.
